Arabella
Arabella ♀ Of uncertain origin; probably an altered form of An(n)abella (see Annabel). It occurs in Scotland and the North of England from the 1600s onwards.
Variant: Arabel (now rare, but commoner in earlier centuries, when it was also sometimes found as Orabel, apparently altered by folk etymology to conform with Latin orabilis ‘invokable’ (from orare ‘to pray to’), i.e. a saint who could be invoked). |

Arabella
Arabella. Opera in 3 acts by R. Strauss to lib. by Hofmannsthal based on a combination of his short story Lucidor (1909) and his play Der Fiaker als Graf (The Cabby as Count) (1925). Their last collaboration. Comp. 1930–2. Prod. Dresden 1933, CG 1934, NY Met 1955. Rev. 1939 (Munich).
