Ara
Ara or Arrah , city (1991 pop. 157,082), Bihar state, NE India, on the Son Canal. A major road and rail junction, it is the administrative center for a district that produces grain, sugarcane, and oilseed. There are limestone deposits on the outskirts. Ara was the scene of fighting during the Indian Mutiny (1857), when the British were attacked by Kunwar Singh. |

ara (pl. arae). Roman altar. It could be a large, public, commemorative structure, like the sumptuous Ara Pacis (erected by Emperor Augustus to mark the establishment of Imperial power and the coming of peace in 13 BC), or a small altar in a private house by which the protection of the deities was invoked.

Ara
Ara (abbr. Ara, gen. Arae) A small constellation of the southern sky, representing an altar. Its brightest stars are Alpha and Beta Arae, both magnitude 2.8. Ara contains the open cluster NGC 6193 and the globular cluster NGC 6397.
