Apollodorus. Athenian painter of the late 5th century bc. None of his works survive, but ancient writers rated him as one of the leading painters of his period. He was nicknamed Sciagraphus (Shadow Painter) because he was the first to model his figures in light and shade, a notable step forward in pictorial illusion that was carried further by Zeuxis.
