Anyang

Anyang, China, South Korea China (Henan): ‘Peaceful Sun’ from ān and yáng ‘sun’. Yáng here refers to locations on the southern sides of mountains, that is, with exposure to the sun; thus, yáng here has the meaning of ‘facing the sun’. Yáng is one of the two complementary principles of Chinese philosophy and culture. It is of heaven, male, active, and light in contrast to yin, which is of earth, female, passive, and dark. Anyang was the last capital of the Yin (Shang) dynasty between 1300 and 1066 bc, but it was at that time called Yinxu. It was known as Xin Zhongyi during the Warring States Period (475–255 bc) and Ning Xinzhong, where nìng means ‘peaceful’ or ‘pacified’ and zhōng ‘inside’ or ‘central’, just before it was conquered by the state of Qin and renamed Anyang county.
