Annas

Annas High priest, 6–15 CE; father-in-law of Caiaphas (John 18: 13). Although deposed, Annas continued to hold an influential position in the Sanhedrin, and according to John 18 (but not mentioned in the synoptic gospels) Annas presided over a preliminary hearing of the case against Jesus before the trial by Caiaphas.

Annas [Gr.,=Heb. Hananiah ], in the New Testament, Jewish high priest who examined Jesus. Nonbiblical sources say that he was retired high priest. His son-in-law was Caiaphas.
