Andrews, Frank Maxwell
Andrews, Frank Maxwell (1884–1943) Army officer and Army Signal Corps aviator, born in Nashville, Tennessee. Andrews was a strong advocate for a modern air force within the army and believed in the strategic potential of bomber aircraft. He helped develop and acquire weapons such as the B-17 Flying Fortress. In 1943 he succeeded Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as supreme commander of American forces in Europe and helped to plan Operation Overlord. He died in a plane crash near Iceland.
In 1949 the newly independent U.S. Air Force named Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, in his honor. |
