Andrew Porter

Porter, Andrew

Porter, Andrew (1743–1813) Revolutionary War army officer, born in Pennsylvania. Porter's affinity for books and intellectual interests led him to Philadelphia, where he became a teacher. In June 1776 he accepted a commission as captain of marines; later he switched to the army, becoming captain of the 2nd Continental Artillery. He fought at Princeton (1777) and was commended for bravery by Gen. George Washington. He continued to serve meritoriously, but in 1780 he was court-martialed for having defamed a fellow officer. Porter was found not guilty, but he filed charges against his accuser, earning Washington's wrath. In 1782 he killed a man in a duel whom he believed had insulted him for being a teacher; Proctor was again acquitted in a court-martial. He declined a commission in the War of 1812 because of failing health.
