Schiavone, Andrea
Schiavone, Andrea ( Andrea Meldolla) (b Zara, Dalmatia [now Zadar, Croatia], c.1510/15; d Venice, 1 Dec. 1563). Italian painter and etcher. His nickname Schiavone means ‘Slav’, reflecting the fact that he was born in Dalmatia (then under Venetian jurisdiction), although his family was originally from Meldola, near Rimini. He worked mainly in Venice, where he was on friendly terms with Titian (who along with Parmigianino was one of the main influences on his style). His most characteristic works were fairly small religious or mythological pictures for private patrons, done in a vigorous, painterly style that had considerable influence on the next generation.
