Anáhuac
Anáhuac, Mexico, USA Mexico: two states, Nuevo León and Zacetecas, have towns with this name. They are less well known than the region that was the centre of Aztec Mexico. The name means ‘Land by the Water’ in Nahuatl, a reference to the five interlocking lakes which surrounded Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City) when the Spanish arrived in 1519. They have since been drained.
