Amoy
Amoy (Xiamén), Fujian/China Jiahe Island ‘Great Gate’ from xià ‘great’ or ‘large’ and mén ‘gate’or ‘door’. The island is so‐named due to its location at the mouth of the Jiulung River. During the Song (960–1279), Yüan (1279–1368), and Ming (1368–1644) dynasties it was called Jiahe Island from jiahe ‘auspicious grain’, a reference to the time when the island had a bountiful crop, three to four times the normal harvest. Sometime after 1394 it was mentioned as Xiamén when the island was fortified against the depredations of pirates. However, this name was not formally adopted until the Qing (or Manchu) dynasty (1644–1911). The city‐port with the same name was occupied by the British in 1841 and a year later it was opened up to foreign trade by the Treaty of Nanking. The Fujianese call both the island and port Amoy, which is a version of Xiamén in their language; Europeans preferred this because it was easier to pronounce.
