Amherst

Amherst town (1991 pop. 9,742), N central N.S., Canada. Amherst has a variety of light industries and is a service center for the surrounding agricultural region. Nearby are salt beds. Across the border in New Brunswick is Fort Beausejour National Historic Park. Sir Charles Tupper, the Canadian statesman, was born in Amherst.

Canada (Nova Scotia): the original French name ‘The Land’, a reference to its location on rising ground above the Tantramar Marshes, gave way to Amherst in 1759 in honour of Jeffrey Amherst, later 1st Baron Amherst, the British commander in North America who captured Canada from the French between 1758 and 1760.2. USA (Massachusetts): founded and named in 1759 after Jeffrey Amherst.
