American Abstract Artists
American Abstract Artists (AAA). An association of abstract painters and sculptors formed in New York in 1936 with the aim of promoting members' work and fostering public understanding of it. The group held annual exhibitions (the first in 1937) and disseminated information by lectures and publications. Balcomb Greene was the first president, and among the other early members were Josef Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and David Smith. In 1940 members picketed the Museum of Modern Art, demanding that it should show American art, but after the Second World War abstract art received the recognition they had sought and the activities of the association dwindled. It continued to stage exhibitions, however, and in the 1950s it revived other activities and built up a membership of more than 200.
