Dubois, Ambroise
Dubois, Ambroise (b Antwerp, c.1543; d Fontainebleau, 1614). Netherlandish-born painter who settled in France as a young man and became a French citizen in 1601. With Dubreuil and Fréminet (who married his widow) he ranks as one of the leading artists of the Second School of Fontainebleau. Much of his decorative work still survives at Fontainebleau, showing him to have been an accomplished practitioner of an elegant, conventional Mannerist style.
