Legros, Alphonse
Legros, Alphonse (b Dijon, 8 May 1837; d Watford, 8 Dec. 1911). French-born painter, printmaker, and designer who settled in England in 1863 (encouraged by Whistler) and became a British citizen in 1881, although he never acquired fluency in English. His chief importance was as an influential teacher (particularly of etching) at the Slade School, where he was professor 1876–92 in succession to Poynter. He encouraged a respect for the tradition of the Old Masters. See also medal.

Legros, Alphonse
Legros, Alphonse (1837–1911). French-born etcher, painter, sculptor, and teacher who settled in England in 1863 (encouraged by Whistler) and became a British citizen in 1881, although he never acquired fluency in English. His chief importance was as an influential teacher (particularly of etching) at the Slade School, where he was professor 1876–92 in succession to Poynter. He encouraged a respect for the tradition of the Old Masters.
