Aloys Senefelder

Aloys Senefelder , 1771-1834, German lithographer, b. Prague. Senefelder invented lithography in Munich c.1796. In 1818 he published a full account of the nature and the history of his invention. The English translation, A Complete Course of Lithography, appeared in 1819.

Senefelder, Aloys (b Prague, 6 Nov. 1771; d Munich, 26 Feb. 1834). German writer who in 1798 invented lithography as a cheap means of reproducing his plays. He soon realized the artistic possibilities of his invention, which he publicized in two books (1809 and 1818). The second was translated into English as A Complete Course of Lithography (1819).
