Almagest

Almagest A compendium of astronomical and mathematical knowledge written by Ptolemy in about ad150. It incorporates the star catalogue compiled by Hipparchus, upon whose work Ptolemy may have drawn for other parts of the book. It is the most complete surviving treatise on ancient astronomy, and contains descriptions of the 48 Greek constellations on which our present-day constellation system is based. Its original Greek title was Syntaxis; Almagest, the name it acquired when translated into Arabic in about ad820, means ‘the greatest’.

The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable | 2006 | | Copyright

Almagest an Arabic version of Ptolemy's astronomical treatise; in the Middle Ages (also with lower-case initial) any celebrated treatise on astrology and alchemy. The word comes from Old French, based on Arabic, from al ‘the’ + Greek megistē ‘greatest (composition)’.

Almagest (Lat. form of Arab., al-majisti, which in turn is the Arab. form of Gk. megalē syntaxis). Ptolemy's work on astronomy, which became the basis of the extensive Muslim work in that field.
