Alīgarh

Alīgarh, Uttar Pradesh/India Koil/Kol, Muhammadgarh Sabitgarh, Ramgarh In 1524–5 the governor of Kol, Muhammad, built a fort here and named it Muhammadgarh ‘Muhammad’s fort’ after himself with garh ‘fort’. Sabit Khan, governor of the region in the 18th century, rebuilt the fort and renamed it Sabitgarh. Following the occupation of the town by the Jāţ in 1775 it was renamed Ramgarh. Its present name was finally adopted a year later to mean ‘Hight Fortress’.

Aligarh

Aligarh , city (1991 pop. 480,520), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India. A district administrative headquarters and an important agricultural trade center, it also has a number of processing plants for agricultural goods. It is famous chiefly for Aligarh Muslim university, opened in 1875 as Anglo-Oriental College, which is the leading school for Indian Muslims. The city, whose native name is Koil, has ancient Buddhist remains and many Muslim buildings.
