Alice Springs
Alice Springs, Northern Territory/Australia Stuart While surveying a route for the Overland Telegraph Line, William Mills discovered some springs in a dried‐up river bed here. He named the river in 1870 the River Todd after Charles Todd (1826–1910) (later Sir Charles Heavitree Todd, Superintendent of Telegraphs for South Australia (1870–1905)) and the springs Alice after Todd's wife. Todd was known as Telegraph Todd, his great project being to cross Australia from Darwin to Adelaide and set up a telegraph service. It took fifteen years (1857–72), but was not quite completed, having a 394‐mile (634 km) gap. The present town originated in 1871 as a telegraph station on the Line, known as Alice Springs. When it became recognized as a town in 1890 it was called Stuart after the Scottish explorer John McDouall Stuart (1815–66). It reverted to Alice Springs in 1933.
