Algoa Bay
Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape/South Africa Angra da Roca, Bahía da Lagoa First named by the Portuguese ‘Bay of Rocks’ from angra ‘bay’ in 1488, it was later changed to ‘Lagoon Bay’. The present name may be derived from the second Portuguese name. However, algoa means ‘needles’ in Old Portuguese and this name may have been chosen because of the needle‐sharp rocks off Port Elizabeth.
