Alexander Tsankov

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Alexander Tsankov , 1879-1959, Bulgarian politician. A professor of political economy at the Univ. of Sofia, he was instrumental in the overthrow (1923) of the dictatorship of Alexander Stambuliski . As premier (1923-26), he mercilessly fought members of the Peasants' and Communist parties, and his administration's relations with Greece and Yugoslavia were strained. After his government fell, Tsankov remained active in right-wing politics and favored the Nazis. In 1944 he fled Bulgaria. He died in Buenos Aires. Dragan Tsankov
...Liberal party, and became (1879) diplomatic agent at Constantinople. Made premier in 1880, he disagreed with Prince Alexander and was imprisoned (1882-83). He formed a government when Alexander abdicated, but it was soon replaced by a regency. Read more
Alexander Stambuliski
...carry out the provisions of the Treaty of Neuilly, which he had helped to negotiate in 1919. In 1923 a coup, supported by army officers and Macedonian nationalists led by Alexander Tsankov , overthrew his government, and Stambuliski was killed. Read more
