Moray, Alexander Stewart, 5th earl of
Moray, Alexander Stewart, 5th earl of [S] (1634–1701). Moray was a descendant of Regent Moray, himself an illegitimate son of James V. He rose to high office after the Restoration, campaigning against the covenanters. From 1675–6 he was justice-general [S], a lord of the Treasury in 1678, and served as secretary of state [S] from 1680 to 1689. During the reign of James VII he was appointed commissioner to the Parliament summoned in 1686 to give relief to the catholics and he subsequently announced his own conversion. In 1687 he received the Thistle. He was deprived of all his offices after the Glorious Revolution and was fined in 1693 for not attending Parliament.
