Garden, Alexander
Garden, Alexander (1757–1829) Revolutionary army officer, born in Charleston, South Carolina. Garden was a member of Lee's Legion (a noted cavalry force commanded by Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee), and later an aide-de-camp to Gen. Nathanael Greene, but known primarily for his postwar role in celebrating and romanticizing the Revolutionary War in a published collection of anecdotes and character portraits (1822). Garden was active in the South Carolina Society of the Cincinnati (1808–29) and became famous for his eulogies of dead patriots.

Alexander Garden
Alexander Garden c.1730–1791, Scottish-American naturalist and physician, b. Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He settled in Charleston, S.C., where he collected mineral, plant, and animal specimens and discovered new species, including the amphibians known as the congo snake or congo eel and the siren or mud eel. He corresponded with Linnaeus and other European naturalists, and the gardenia was named for him. A loyalist during the American Revolution, he was exiled to England in 1782. |
