Alexander Barclay

Alexander Barclay , 1475?-1552, Scottish clergyman and poet. Although the first to write pastoral eclogues in English, he is best known for The Ship of Fools (1509), a translation and elongation of Sebastian Brant's widely popular poem Das Narrenschiff.

Barclay, Alexander (?1475–1552), poet, scholar, and divine, translated Brant's Narrenschiff into English verse as The Ship of Fools (1509) and wrote his Eclogues at Ely (c.1513–14).

Fuller Maitland, J(ohn) A(lexander) (b London, 1856; d Carnforth, 1936). Eng. critic, editor, and harpsichordist. Started career as mus. critic, Pall Mall Gazette, 1882–4, Manchester Guardian 1884–9, chief critic of The Times 1889–1911. One of founders of Folk Song Soc. 1898, having collaborated with L. Broadwood in English County Songs, 1893. Ed. 2nd edn. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1904–10). Ed. (with W. Barclay Squire) Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (1894–9). Also wrote books on Schumann, Brahms, Joachim, J. S. Bach, and 19th-cent. Eng. mus.
