Alberto Savinio

Savinio, Alberto

Savinio, Alberto (originally Andrea de Chirico) (1891–1952). Italian musician, writer, painter, and designer, born in Athens, brother of Giorgio de Chirico. He studied music at the Athens Conservatory (graduating when he was only 12) and in Munich under Max Reger. As a composer he concentrated on theatrical works, writing his first opera, Carmela, when he was 15. From 1910 to 1915 he lived in Paris with his brother, to whom he was devoted; he adopted his pseudonym in 1912 to distinguish himself from Giorgio. When Italy entered the First World War in 1915, Savinio was posted to Ferrara and then Salonika, where he worked as in interpreter. After the war he began to write articles for the periodical Valori plastici in which he helped to define the character of Metaphysical Painting; other writings by Savinio helped to inspire the imagery of the faceless mannequins that appear in so many of his brother's paintings. In 1926 Savinio moved back to Paris and began to paint seriously (earlier he had made drawings for the stage and some collages). Jean Cocteau organized the first exhibition of his work, at the Galerie Jacques Bernheim, Paris, in 1927. His work was in a rather heavy-handed Surrealist idiom, often using mythological imagery. In 1933 he returned to Italy, where he continued to paint and work on a wide variety of artistic activities, including writing semi-autobiographical novels such as Capitano Ulise (1934). After the Second World War he worked mainly for the theatre as writer, composer, designer, and producer.
