Albertina

Albertina

Albertina (Graphische Sammlung Albertina), Vienna. One of the world's most celebrated collections of Old Master drawings and prints. It is named after Archduke Albert of Sachsen-Teschen (1738–1822), son of Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, and son-in-law of the Empress Maria-Theresa (see Habsburg). Albert led a cosmopolitan life and he formed his remarkable collection mainly whilst he was governor of Hungary (1765–80) and then the Netherlands (1780–92). In 1793 he settled in Vienna and soon afterwards took up residence in the palace on the Augustinerstrasse in which his collection is still housed. The collection was enlarged by his successors and taken over by the state in 1918. It is particularly rich in drawings by the great Italian and German masters of the 16th century (among them a superlative group by Dürer that can be traced back directly to the artist's widow), by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th century, and by French artists of the 18th century. A changing selection of its treasures is on view to the public.
