Albert van Ouwater

Ouwater, Albert van

Ouwater, Albert van (active mid-15th century). Netherlandish painter. There is no known contemporary information on him (an alleged reference to him in 1467 is now thought to be a misreading of the document), and knowledge of his life depends on the account in van Mander's Schilder-boeck (1604). According to this, Ouwater was the founder of the Haarlem School and the teacher of Geertgen tot Sint Jans. Van Mander also praised Ouwater's skill as a landscapist, so it is ironic that the only painting that can be identified as his from the descriptions of his work in the Schilder-boeck is an interior scene—the Raising of Lazarus (c.1440–50, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin). The thoughtful, unemotional style of this picture has some affinities with the work of Dieric Bouts, who was probably a native of Haarlem.
