Albany

Albany , town (1996 pop. 14,590), Western Australia, SW Australia. It is a port on Princess Royal Harbour of King George Sound. The town has woolen mills and fish canneries. Founded in 1826 as a penal colony, Albany is the oldest settlement in the state of Western Australia.

Albany, Australia, USA 1. Australia (Western Australia): developed from a penal settlement in 1826 and renamed Frederickstown after Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763–1827) and the second son of King George III^†. Within six years the name Albany was more commonly used than Frederickstown.2. USA (New York): originally Fort Orange and then Beverwyck and Rensselaerswyck. Finally the city was named after the Duke of York and Albany, later James II^†. Founded in 1624 by the Dutch as Fort Orange, the attached settlement was called Beverwyck. When it was passed to Kiliaen van Rensselaer, a merchant from Amsterdam, it was renamed after him. The city passed to the British in 1664 when it was given its present name.
