Alan John Bayard Wace

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Alan John Bayard Wace 1879-1957, English archaeologist. From 1914 to 1923 he was director of the British School at Athens. He served as professor of classical archaeology at Cambridge (1934-44) and at Farouk I Univ., Alexandria (1943-52). Wace excavated at Sparta, Mycenae, Troy, Thessaly, Corinth, and Alexandria. His writings include Prehistoric Thessaly (1912); Mycenae, an Archaeological History and Guide (1949); and A Companion to Homer (1962).
