Agustin Moreto y Cabana

Moreto y Cabaña, Agustín

Moreto y Cabaña, Agustín (1618–69), Spanish playwright, author of a number of good religious and historical plays, but mainly remembered for his comedias, of which the best are considered to be El desdén con el desdén (Scorn for Scorn, pub. 1654) and El lindo Don Diego (pub. 1662). The first, based on several comedies by Lope de Vega, who with Tirso de Molina was the main influence on Moreto's work, shows a young noblewoman who has disdained her suitors being in turn disdained by the man she loves—a situation later used by Molière in La Princesse d'Élide (1664). The second is an amusing trifle about a foppish young man who spends most of the day getting dressed, but whose arrival in Madrid nevertheless threatens the happiness of two young lovers. It is an excellent example of the comedia de figurón, in which Moreto excelled. An inventive and engaging gracioso figures in many of his plays.
