agrapha
agrapha A Greek word (in the plural) for sayings of Jesus which are not written in the gospels or found sometimes only in inferior MSS and not regarded as authentic parts of the text. The best-known example is the insertion by codex D at Luke 6: 5; Jesus said to a man working on the sabbath, ‘Man, if you know what you are doing you are blessed; but if you do not know, you are a transgressor of the law.’ There are agrapha in the Oxyrhynchus papyri and the Gnostic documents discovered at Nag Hammadi and in some writings of the Church Fathers. Since sayings of Jesus were in the first Christian generation passed on orally, it is thought that about a dozen of the agrapha may be authentic reminiscences which were not used by the four evangelists.

Agrapha
Agrapha (‘unwritten [sayings]’). A name given to the sayings of Christ not recorded in the four canonical Gospels. One occurs in Acts (20: 35), others in the apocryphal Gospels, especially the Gospel of Thomas, and in the writings of the Fathers.
