Aeolis
Aeolis or Aeolia , ancient region of the west coast of Asia Minor (in present-day Turkey). Aeolis was not a geographic term but a collective term for the cities founded there by the Aeolians, a branch of the Hellenic peoples. The 12 southern cities were grouped in the Aeolian League; these were Temnos, Smyrna, Pitane, Neonteichos, Aegirusa, Notium, Cilla or Killa, Cyme, Gryneum, Larissa, Myrina, and Aegae. |

Aeolis
Aeolis, the name given in classical times to the territory in the northern part of the west coast of Asia Minor, from the Troad to the river Hermus, which had been occupied by Aeolian Greeks (for the name see AEOLUS (2)). These Greeks, around the end of the second millenium BC, migrated from Boeotia and Thessaly and founded their first settlements in Lesbos; from there they spread northwards and along the coast.
