Adlai

Adlai

Adlai ♂ Biblical name, borne by a very minor character, the father of one of King David's herdsmen (1 Chronicles 27:29). It represents an Aramaic contracted form of the Hebrew name Adaliah ‘God is just’, and is one of a large number of minor biblical names taken up by the Puritans in the 17th century. Many of them, including Adlai, were taken to New England by the early settlers and have survived in North America. Adlai is particularly associated with the American statesman and Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson (1900–65), in whose family the name was traditional: it was also borne by his grandfather (1835–1914), who was vice-president in 1893–97.
