Abner

Abner A cousin of King Saul, in whose army he was the commander (1 Sam. 14: 50). In the war ‘between the house of Saul and the house of David’ (2 Sam. 3: 6) Abner continued with the forces of Saul's son for a time but later transferred his allegiance to David, who welcomed his defection and was dismayed and angered by his general Joab's private feud (2 Sam. 3: 31); at Hebron Joab had stabbed Abner in the stomach (2 Sam. 3: 27).
