Aberdeen
Aberdeen, Andaman Islands, China, South Africa, UK, USA UK (Scotland): formerly Aberdon ‘(Place at the) Mouth of the (River) Don’ from aber ‘river mouth’. The ancient river name was Devona, which was also the name of a goddess. Although Aberdeen now lies between the mouths of the Rivers Dee and Don, it was developed from Old Aberdeen, which lies at the mouth of the Don and which was almost completely destroyed by the English in 1336. The famous breed of cattle, Aberdeen Angus, derives its name from two adjacent counties in which the cattle originated, Aberdeenshire and Angus.
