Roding, Abbess

Roding, Abbess, Roding, Aythorpe, Roding, Beauchamp, Roding, High, Roding, Leaden, Roding, Margaret, & Roding, White Essex. Rodinges c.1050, 1086 (DB), Roinges Abbatisse 1237, Roeng Aytrop 1248, Roynges Beuchamp 1238, High Roinges 1224, Ledeineroing 1248, Roinges Sancte Margaret c.1245, White Roeng 1248. ‘(Settlement of) the family or followers of a man called *Hrōth(a)’. OE pers. name + -ingas. The affixes Abbess, Aythorpe, and Beauchamp are all manorial, from early possession by the Abbess of Barking, by a man called Aitrop, and by the de Beauchamp family respectively. High Roding refers to its situation, Leaden (OE lēaden) to the lead roof of the church, Margaret to the dedication of the church, and White to the colour of the church walls. The river-name Roding is a ‘back- formation’ from the place-name; the earlier name for the river was Hyle, see Ilford.
