Aasiaat
Aasiaat, Greenland/Denmark Egedesminde ‘The Spiders’ in Inuktitut. The original Inuktitut name was Asiaat. In the centre of a populated region on the west coast of Greenland, the name gives the idea of a spider's web, although the spiders that live here do not spin webs. It was named in 1759 by Niels Egede, after his father, Hans, a missionary and trader, who founded the first trading company in 1721.
