Evatt, Herbert V.
Evatt, Herbert V. (1894–1965),Australian lawyer and influential Labour politician who became Attorney General and minister of external affairs in John Curtin's Labour cabinet formed in October 1941. Of an independent turn of mind and ‘a granite personality’, he retained his post throughout the war and represented his country in the British war cabinet, in early negotiations with the US government—where he ‘upset the American assumption that Australians were a sort of Englishman’; ( K. Tennant, Evatt: Politics and Justice, Sydney, 1970, p. 142)—and, to great effect, at the San Francisco conference in April 1945 where the United Nations was officially founded. He helped write the UN charter, led Australia's delegation at the UN (1946–8), and was UN president in 1948–9. See also Australia, 3.
