The Early Years of X Ambassadors
The band consists of brothers Sam and Casey Harris, their childhood friend from kindergarten Noah Feldshuh, and Adam Levin, whom Sam met while attending the New School in New York City. Casey Harris also happens to be blind.
When X Ambassadors initially started out, they went by the name Ambassadors. They self-released their first compilation of music, an EP titled Ambassadors EP. They also created their own music video for their first single called ‘Tropisms’. They then started work on their next EP, called Litost. The title track from the EP would later go on to be featured on the soundtrack for The Host.
Signing a Record Deal
In 2012, the band signed a music publishing deal with SONGS Music Publishing. They started a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise funds for them to shoot a video for their lead single ‘Unconsolable’. The band received their big break when they were noticed by the front man of the popular band Imagine Dragons. While front man Dan Reynolds was sick in the hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, he was listening to 96X WROX-FM and heard an acoustic version of ‘Unconsolable’. He was so impressed that he asked his record label, Interscope Records, to sign the band immediately.
Recording and Touring
Once they were signed, X Ambassadors would go on to record and release their first major label EP called Love Songs Drug Songs in 2013. One of the songs on the EP, ‘Stranger’, was co-written by Dan Reynolds.
After the release of their EP, X Ambassadors would tour extensively in order to promote themselves. They hit the road with the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Imagine Dragons, and The Mowglis.
The following year, the band released another EP, called The Reason. This was followed by more touring with Imagine Dragons and Panic! At The Disco.
X Ambassadors would release their debut album, VHS, on June 30, 2015. The album featured 20 tracks. 7 of the songs were interludes, and 3 were rerecording of previously released material. That left 10 new tracks in the 20 track line-up. Some of the tracks were collaborations with Imagine Dragons and Jamie N Commons.
Collaboration with the Knocks
X Ambassadors have also done numerous collaborations over the years, including with The Knocks. When the Knocks duo originally released their track ‘Comfortable’ from their debut album 55, it featured the X Ambassadors.
In 2016, the two bands would reunite for another collaboration. This time, the collaboration was titled ‘Heat’ and was released in October 2016.
The Unique Musical Sound of X Ambassadors
The reason why X Ambassadors has caught the attention of music fans and critics across the world is due to their unique sound.
When asked about their sound, band members distinctly characterize it as rock, but also admit that they incorporate certain indie elements into their music.
When asked about their biggest musical influences, the band listed the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, and Michael Bolton.
