U2 formed in 1976 when the members of the band were attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. It didn’t take the band long to get the attention of fans and individuals in the music industry. Their sound was fresh, raw, and urgent. Their lyrics, from the start, tackled heavier themes, everything from politics to religion.
The 1980’s were an important time for the band. They released six studio albums, including Boy (1980), October (1981), War (1983), The Unforgettable Fire (1984), The Joshua Tree (1987), and Rattle and Hum (1988). To promote their music, they toured relentlessly. By the time of the release of The Joshua Tree, U2 had attained international stardom.
Their success continued into the 90’s due to their ability to constantly reinvent their sound. While retaining their original flare and their conscientious lyrics, U2 was able to consistently experiment with different genres and bring a freshness to their music that kept drawing in fans.
Today, after selling over 170 million records worldwide and touring across the globe, U2 is regarded as one of the bestselling bands of all time. They have also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, won numerous accolades including 22 Grammy Awards and been included in the Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The band is also actively involved in numerous philanthropic and human rights causes.
