About the Musical Theatre
Musical plays or theatre are in many ways structurally different from regular theatre. The entirety of the story as well as the emotional content of a musical, whether it is love, humor, anger, etc., is communicated using a combination of elements. These elements could include words, movements, music, and songs.
There are many instances where musical theatre has been compared to other similar theatrical forms such as dance and opera. However, musicals are clearly distinguished from these other arts forms by certain distinct qualities. Primarily, musicals tend to give equal importance to all the elements which go into making it, such as words, music, songs, dialogues, movements, etc.
Musicals are a very popular form of theatre and art. Today, they are performed around the whole world and in many different forms. Some of the most popular musicals are performed in large venues with renowned casts and crews in places such as Broadway and the West End in New York City and London. On the other hand, musical theatre is a form of art that is indulged in many people on many different scales. Musicals are performed in schools, in performing arts academies, as well as regional theatres.
As a form of art, musicals are dynamic, engaging, and unique.
The History of Musicals
Musicals have been around since ancient times. The earliest evidence for musicals comes from the theatres of ancient Greece. In the 5th century BCE, music, dance, and dialogue were merged together in both stage comedies as well as tragedies. In the 12th and 13th centuries, religious dramas employed elements of musicals in order to teach the liturgy.
It must be noted that from its earliest account and through the successive years, the musicals of that time were unique in that they weren’t being influenced by earlier versions of musicals. These were simply distinct accounts of theatrical productions using elements of modern day musicals.
By the time the Renaissance came around in Europe, the predominant forms of musical theatre were the opera buffa and the commedia dell'arte.
In Britain and America, the structural elements of musicals were established by Gilbert and Sullivan and Harrigan and Hart respectively.
As musicals have evolved, the concept of a ‘book musical’ has taken root. Essentially, a book musical is one which incorporates both song and dance into the telling of a fully-fleshed out story. This story has a clear progression as is able to evoke a wide range of emotions as opposed to solely laughter.
Today, musicals are a powerful art form used to tell some of the most compelling stories of our time. They are able to convey a wide range of emotions and are able to draw audiences in to complex stories.
