The Basics of Tennis

Tennis is a type of racket sport which is played using a tennis racket and a hollow rubber felt covered ball. The racket itself is strung with cords in order to make striking the ball into the opponent’s side of the court effective. In terms of courts, there are several different kinds, including ones made of grass, sand, or clay. It is a game which can either be played as a singles game, which involves single opponents going up against each other, or as a doubles game, which involves two teams of two individuals each. The purpose of the game is to serve the ball to the opponent in such a manner that the opponent is unable to serve back a valid return. There are a number of popular tennis tournaments which occur throughout the world at different times in the year. These include the four Grand Slam tournaments, also known as the Majors – the US Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open.

Scoring in Tennis

Tennis games have a number of sets, each of which has a number of games, which have a number of points. In tennis, a game consists of a sequence of points which are played by the same player who is serving. In order to win a game, a player must win at least four points in total or have at least two points more than their opponent. The scoring in tennis is described in a way which is unique to tennis. Scores from zero to four are referred to as love, 15, 30, 40 and game, respectively. When both players have three points each, or have scores equal to forty, the score isn’t referred to as forty-forty. Instead, it is called ‘deuce’. In a game, whoever is serving will have their score read out first. After each point, the score is called out by the umpire. After each game, the final score and the winner of the game is called out. To win a set, a player typically has to win six games. A match is made up of either two or three sets; the player who wins the most sets, wins the match.

A History of Tennis

The origins of tennis are believed to stretch back thousands of years. It is believed that the ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Greeks all played games which could have been seen as precursors to modern day tennis. It is also believed that tennis itself evolved from a game called jeu de paume ("game of the palm") which was played in Northern France in the 12th century. This game was a favorite of Louis X of France and involved hitting a ball with the palm of the hand. It was in the 16th century that rackets were introduced in the game and it was then called ‘tennis’. The word tennis comes from the French term ‘tenez’ which means hold!, take!, or receive!. These were common interjections used between players when playing the game. The game of tennis was hugely popular in both England and France. In 1830, the first lawn mower was patented in Britain. This signaled the beginning of the grass courts era in tennis.
