About MMA

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a fairly new sport.

Its origin can be traced back to the early 20th century in the Pacific Rim and Japan. At the time, there were a number of contests being held which used different mixed styles for fighting.

MMA made its way to the United States in 1980. At this time, CV Productions, Inc. created the first regulated league for MMA in the country. The league was called Tough Guy Contest early on and then later renamed Battle of the Super Fighters. Initially, the company had provided for ten tournaments to be held in Pennsylvania. However due to the violent nature of the sport, the Pennsylvania State Senate passed a bill which prohibited the sport in the state.

The present day MMA in the US is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) which was founded in the early 90s.

The Different Fighting Styles used in MMA

MMA is characterized by its use of various different fighting styles. This includes elements of boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu/Grappling, Wrestling, kickboxing, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and Sanshou/Sanda.

Each of these different fighting styles is employed to varying degrees in MMA contests. For instance, most of the stances, striking positions, footwork, and defensive positions in the sport are taken from traditional boxing. Muay Thai also forms a major chunk of MMA. It is known as the art of eight limbs which refers to a fighter making use of their legs, knees, elbows and fists.
