History

The first ever college football game was played on November 6, 1869, between the College of New Jersey (present day Princeton University) and Rutgers University. The game rules were different then. For starters, the ball was round instead of the oval shaped used today. The players were only allowed to kick the ball and not carry or throw it. However, with the passage of time, football rules changed and evolved. The way football is played now, including at professional level, was developed at the college level. It was at the college football level that American football rules first gained popularity.

A Sport that Killed

While the sport became popular during the 19th and 20th century, it also grew violent. With fewer rules, gang tackling and mass formations became a regular feature. From 1890 to 1905, 330 college football players died due to injuries sustained on football field. This led to President Theodore Roosevelt holding a meeting with football representatives from Princeton, Harvard and Yale universities, urging them to find ways to reduce injuries. This meeting took place in 1905.

In 1906, President Roosevelt invited football representatives from thirteen universities to the White House to find ways to make football safer for athletes. Since the schools could not find consensus on the rules of the game, it was decided that an external body be formed to make changes in existing football rules. As a result, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) was formed in 1906. This body was renamed National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1910.

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

Today, there are four levels of college football in the NCAA. Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is the top level of college football. The subsequent three levels are the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II and Division III. There are 130 teams in the FBS. As it is the most competitive, the FBS is divided into 10 conferences.

How ‘Big’ is College Football?

College football generates millions of dollars in revenue annually. Thousands of fans flock to see the top FBS teams every season. With TV rights, packed stadiums and advertisement deals, interestingly college football players are not paid. However, the schools compensate their players by granting athletic scholarships covering their tuition, books and housing.

The Heisman Trophy

The Heisman Trophy is a 13.5 inch high and 25 pounds in weight cast bronze trophy. Handed to the most outstanding college football player every year, the Heisman Trophy epitomizes the best of college football. The nominees are selected by a panel of voters that include media members from all across the country. Former winners also have a vote in the selection. Created in 1935 as the Downtown Athletic Club (of Manhattan) trophy, the award was renamed after the death of legendary coach and innovator John Heisman, the club’s director.
