In Canada, the governing bodies include U Sports and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The organizations which govern college basketball are typically divided into three divisions, which correspond to the level of scholarships which may be given to athletes.
After the sport was invented in 1891, the first game was played at the YMCA in the 1891-1892 season. By the following year, college basketball was being played at colleges across the country. The History of College Basketball
College basketball, as mentioned earlier, was created in 1891. At this point in time, many college physical education directors across the country were noticing that there were very few students who actually took physical education classes, especially in the winter. What’s more, athletes who were part of the track team in college would struggle to stay in shape during the cold winter months.
At the YMCA International Training School, which is known today as Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, college basketball would officially be formed. Many physical education directors from the country descended here and asked a physical education teacher, James Naismith, to find a way to help track students stay in shape and prevent them from sustaining injuries. They were also looking to find a way to make gym classes more appealing in the winter months and increase attendance.
Naismith began working hard to create the perfect winter sport. He used two peach baskets and placed them at an elevated height on opposite sides of a long court. He then initially used a soccer ball as the primary scoring mechanism for the game.
On December 21, 1891, the first official basketball game was played at the Springfield YMCA Training School according to rules which were developed by Naismith. Soon after, the sport began taking the country by storm. Soon, college basketball was being played in colleges across the United States.
The sport boomed in popularity rapidly and was even added as a demonstration sport at the 1904 Olympics that were held in St. Louis, Missouri. By the 1930’s, college basketball was one of the most popular sports in the country. This had to do with the fact that the 1936 Olympics were held in New York City and featured basketball and two postseason tournaments were also held there.
This paved the way for college basketball becoming the phenomenon it is today. In fact, the postseason tournament was so popular that today, all 64 games are nationally televised. Some of the Main Differences between College Basketball and the NBA
