The History of the NBA
The National Basketball Association was originally known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946. It was founded by the owners of the major hockey arenas located in the United States and Canada.
What is now officially regarded as the first NBA game to ever be played took place on November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Canada. The game took place between the Toronto Huskies and the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens.
The initial goal of the BAA was to bring professional basketball to major cities and have the games be played in large arenas. It took the league a few years to really establish itself and build a solid reputation for talent. In fact, the BAA soon came to be known as the league for college graduates looking to become professional basketball players.
In 1949, the BAA was officially renamed as the National Basketball Association, or NBA.
