About the San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers was originally founded in 1946 as a charter team in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). They would eventually go on to join the NFL in 1949 when the two leagues merged.

The 49ers were the first major league professional sports team to be based in San Francisco. They derived their name, the 49ers, from the Gold Rush of 1849, which saw a number of prospectors come to Northern California in search of fortunes.

Over the years, the 49ers have called many different stadiums home. They originally used to play at the Kezar Stadium located in San Francisco. They would then move to play at Candlestick Park in the 1970s. By 2014, they had moved to the Levi's Stadium located in Santa Clara.

The San Francisco 49ers are not only one of the most popular teams in major league sports; they are also one of the most successful. Between the periods from 1981 to 1995, the team won five Super Bowl championships. This was a period marked by all-stars in the team, including the likes of Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh, and Ronnie Lott.

As of 2016, the team has won six conference championships and has been crowned division champions 19 times from 1970 to 2012. With so many titles to their name, as well as the fact that they have appeared in the playoffs 25 times, the 49ers are considered to be one of the most successful teams in the history of the NFL.

The 49ers have also set many NFL records. They are not only one of the most valuable sports teams in the world, they have had the most touchdowns in a Super Bowl, most consecutive wins on the road, most consecutive games scored, fewest turn overs in a season, most conference championship game appearances, and more.

Heading to the NFL

The 49ers first season in the NFL was a period of adjustment and the team lost many of its games during this time.

In their second season, the 49ers showed immense improvement. The 1950’s were a period marked by very strong plays by the team and they came to be called the "Million Dollar Backfield". This was because the 49ers consisted of a stellar line-up including four future Hall of Famers: running backs Joe Perry, John Henry Johnson, and Hugh McElhenny as well as quarterback Y. A. Tittle. They would go on to become the only full-house backfield to be inducted into the NFL’s Hall of Fame.

Further Refinement of the 49ers

The 49ers would go through periods where they couldn’t do justice to their talent. But these periods never lasted long. Soon enough, the 49ers would return to top form and dominate the NFL.

Another turning point for the team came in 1968 with the hiring of new head coach Dick Nolan. Nolan changed up the approach of the team. He developed a more sophisticated defense and incorporated it with the immense experience of quarterback John Brodie. This combination helped the 49ers reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons starting in the 1970s.

So strong was the team that Brodie was named the NFL player of the year, head coach Nolan was named coach of the year, and cornerback Bruce Taylor was named rookie of the year.

Two Consecutive Super Bowls

In 1988 and 1989, the San Francisco 49ers made it to two back to back Super Bowls. Under head coach Bill Walsh, the team went on to play in and win Super Bowl XXIII. After the win however, he stepped down as coach. He was replaced by George Seifert who took the team to Super Bowl XXIV. After winning, the 49ers became the only team in the history of the NFL to win two consecutive Super Bowls under two different head coaches.

The 1989 49ers team is still regarded, by many historians, as one of the strongest and most dominant teams in the history of the NFL.

Present Day

Over the past few years, the 49ers have been struggling to return to their former glory. In 2016, the team was ranked as the worst franchise in North America by ESPN. This was due to a poor showing in the season. The 49ers record in 2016 was worse than the one they had in 2015. The 2016 season record also equaled their worse show of performance in 2004. The team’s poor showing resulted in the termination of head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke. It remains to be seen how the 49ers will rebuild and move forward.

The San Francisco in addition to being one of the most successful franchises in NFL history is also the most loved. Even though the last few years haven’t seen the best of this team, true 49ers fans still fill up stadiums on game day. If you want to see a great team in action, then get San Francisco 49ers tickets.
