About the Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers consists of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, drummer Chad Smith, bassist Flea, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.

They are a band which possesses a unique sound. Their musical style is predominantly described as a mixture of rock and funk which also incorporates a variety of other elements including punk, rap, alternative, and psychedelic rock.

Since the band formed in 1983, they have released eleven full length studio albums including The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984), Freaky Styley (1985), The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), Mother's Milk (1989), Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), One Hot Minute (1995), Californication (1999), By the Way (2002), Stadium Arcadium (2006), I'm with You (2011), and The Getaway (2016).

The Early Years

The Red Hot Chili Peppers came together in 1983 while the members were in high school. The band originally went by the name Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, and included member Anthony Kiedis, Flea, as well as drummer Jack Irons, and guitarist Hillel Slovak.

Following the death of Slovak from a heroin overdose, Irons left the band. In 1990, the Chili Peppers signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records and released their first commercially successful album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, in 1991.

Breakthrough Success

To support this album, the band went on a massive tour featuring some of the biggest alternative bands of the early 90’s, including Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam.

This album brought immense fame and fortune to the band and turned them into a household name.

After numerous line-up changes, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer were added to the band’s permanent line-up.
