This classic Christmas show is a 90 minute spectacle, which provides a modern touch and flare to a number of classic Christmas stories. The entire show is filled with singing and dancing that unravels around the performance of the Rockettes.

The 36 member dance troupe brings to life scenes from the Yuletide and a stunning reenactment of the Nativity scene featuring real animals. They also bring out Santa Claus and his reindeer and perform a unique version of ’12 Days of Christmas’.

The show features stunning sets and over 1,300 costumes, many of which are made with real Swarovski crystals. This makes the costumes used for the Christmas Spectacular some of the most expensive costumes in all of show business.

History of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular was originally called the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show and officially launched in 1933. A year after the opening of the Music Hall, a lavish stage show was put on just in time for Christmas and ran for two weeks. Due to the favorable response received by the show, it would eventually go on to become a yearly staple.

The show was originally created by the stage producer of the Music Hall at the time, Leon Leonidoff, as well as the designer, Vincente Minnelli. For many decades, this duo produced and choreographed the entirety of the Christmas Spectacular.

Over the years, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular has gone on to become a Christmas tradition in New York.

The Star Performers of the Show

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular features a variety of performers. However, the stand-out act has always been the Rockettes, a women’s precision dance troupe, whose dance style incorporates elements of classical ballet as well as contemporary dance.

The troupe was founded in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1925 and has been a staple of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular since its very first show. During the Christmas season, the troupe typically performs five shows a day, every day of the week.

They are known for their signature move, an eye-high leg kick which they all perform in unison while standing in a chorus line. This move is typically featured at the end of each performance.
