History of the Phillies

The franchise was initially named Quakers. The team was then renamed Philadelphias, which was shortened to Phillies. In 1890, the team was officially named the Phillies. The Phillies were unimpressive in their first three decades. One of the reasons was that in 1901, the American League (AL) was founded, which caused defections among Phillies players. The team, however, won their first pennant in 1915. The Phillies slumped again and from 1918 to 1948 had only one winning season. In 1949, the team won most of its regular season games, but failed to make it to the post-season.

1950: A Glimmer of Hope

In 1950, the Phillies won their division (their first since 1915) by defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers and advancing into the World Series, where they faced the New York Yankees. The Yankees defeated them 4-0.

Phillies in the Wilderness

From 1951 to 1975, the Phillies consistently lost in the regular seasons. Though the 1964 and 1975 seasons were exceptional in that the Phillies stood second in their league, but still they failed to make it to the playoffs.

Phillies on Top

From 1976 to 1983, the Phillies were in the playoffs six times. This included three back to back playoff appearances from 1976 to 1978. In 1980, the Phillies won their division and advanced into the playoffs. For the National League Championship Series (NLCS) title, they defeated the Houston Astros 3-2 and advanced into the World Series, where they met the Kansas City Royals. The Phillies defeated the Royals 4-2 and with it won their first World Series title.

The Phillies carried the 1980 momentum into the 1981 MLB season, making it into the playoffs again. However, they lost to the Montreal Expos during the National League Division Series (NLDS). In 1983, the Phillies once again advanced into the World Series, but were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles 4-1. For the next 9 seasons, the Phillies were unimpressive. In 1993, however, they once again advanced to the World Series, only to be defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2.

World Champions Again

In 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies won their second World Series title. They defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1. For the next three seasons, the Phillies were consistently in the playoffs, which included one World Series appearance in 2009. However, they have not been to the playoffs since 2012. The 2017 MLB season, therefore, carries many opportunities for the Phillies.
