Early Life and Baby Steps towards becoming a Pop Icon

McCartney was born in Liverpool, England, on June 18, 1942. His mother was a midwife and the primary breadwinner for the family. His father was a pianist and trumpet player, who kept a piano in the house and encouraged his kids to be musical and wanted McCartney to learn the piano. McCartney was however more interested in learning the guitar and got his first acoustic guitar as a teenager. The first song he ever wrote was I Lost My Little Girl and the first song he ever composed on the piano was When I’m Sixty-Four.

McCartney’s early musical influences were rock and roll, rhythm and blues and Little Richard.

The Iconic Duo

On July 6, 1957, McCartney met John Lennon in Liverpool. Lennon was leading the Quarrymen, a rock and roll band then. McCartney was asked to join the band as a rhythm guitarist. Soon McCartney and Lennon struck a close working relationship. Music historians are of the view that one of the reasons why the two became close was one particular experience in their lives – their mothers passed away when they were teenagers.

George Harrison would join the Quarrymen in 1958 as lead guitarist. By 1960, the Quarrymen had gone through many names. These included Silver Beetles, Beatles and Johnny and the Moondogs. However, group finally settled with The Beatles in August 1960.

The Beatles & the Beatlemania

The Beatles released a total of 24 studio albums and McCartney played an instrumental role in the album’s critical and commercial success. While all of these albums were certified in various countries, including their native UK, there were three albums which did exceptionally well in the US – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (“The White Album) and Abbey Road.

The Beatles had however become famous in the US with their historic 1964 Ed Sullivan Show performance. 73 million people in 23 million households watched the performance all across the US. These albums helped them become the biggest pop and rock band in the US.

Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney and Denny Laine

The Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney and Denny Laine trio is better known as Wings. The band was formed in 1971 after the Beatles broke up and lasted till 1981. Wings’ 1977 release, Mull of Kintyre, became their most-successful commercial hit, which remains one of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK.

While McCartney was with Wings, he continued to pursue solo musical projects and released solo albums.

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has released a total of 24 studio albums as a solo artist. Out of these Pipes of Peace, Tug of War, and his self-titled debut solo album, McCartney has enjoyed immense commercial and critical success.

McCartney was released in 1970 and debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200 and at No.2 on the UK Albums chart. Neil Young, another musical legend, had this to say about the record

I loved that record because it was so simple. And there was so much to see and to hear. It was just Paul. There was no adornment at all ... There was no attempt made to compete with the things he had already done. And so out he stepped from the shadow of the Beatles.
